Fuck I need this shit for?
It must be nice to just wake up in the morning and be “proficient,” but, as it happens, there are precisely five (5) — six, if you count Touch and Go & its affiliates — “indie” labels that could qualify as plausible “powerhouses”: Matador, Merge, Sub Pop, K Records, and Kill Rock Stars.
What … should I say “arguably”? Should I point out that one’s in N.Y.C. (Matador … but you knew that already, right?), one’s in Chapel Hill, HC (Merge, which Spoon, Wild Flag, Arcade Fire, The Magnetic Fields, and other-bands-you-might-have-heard-of are on … but you knew that, right?), while the other three (3) ARE ALL IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST!!!
(Should I say “arguably”? Like Seattle’s light-years away, let alone Olympia, and Kill Rocks Star’s moved here a few years or so ago … so what do you “kids” need to be educated about?)
Thanks for the “info.” Thanks for the “advice” and “heads-up.”
ALL those labels, in a darn-near miracle, have prevailed in existing over the course of the past twenty years, despite various nefarious influences (culture-wide cognitive dissonances & apathy; the ongoing resentment of the Largest Generation Ever Birthed about the “Gen X” ruining their illusions of “Eternal Youth,” if they couldn’t deal with it; and, oh, yeah, the vagaries of any marketplace — “of ideas,” or not — which makes “staying afloat” tricky!)
I’ve seen you people around. You don’t do much, talk much, see much coming, appraise much. You’re the “cappuccino foam” on this unprecedented cultural moment (in the only city other than NYC or Austin, TX that could be said to be “lacking nothing” — at least, within “reachable proximity” to each other!)
Don’t forget to talk. Keep “uttering!” Someone’ll quote you in the paper …
MORAL: Saying Gus Van Sant “discovered” Elliott Smith is sorta like saying Richard Linklater “discovered” Superchunk, just ’cause he included them on the subUrbia soundtrack … it’s an “antenna,” sure, even a better sort-of compliment to assess it thusly, as it really happened … but, how’d this “dumb-it-down” mythologizing get started, anyway? (Van Sant wasn’t the only one to hear Either/Or, any more than Soderbergh’s the only GbV fan on the planet … get a thought or two more, before you “add them up” to a “conclusion” like that!)
MORAL #2: Quotation marks rule.
